I knew her long ago, and she was a very sweet young lady. I had heard reports about her extraordinary accomplishments. Her friends and family should be proud of the life that she lived.

As I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes, it's hard to shake Angie was a sweet and kind person who loved people no matter what. I will miss Angie so much she was like a second mom to me and for that I was thankful I met her. She will always be in my heart I enjoyed working with her and I'll miss her telling me all about her recipes she found and tried out.

Dear heather and Frankie there are no words to express the sorrow I feel for you all at this time. Angie was an angel among us. Anne dean and amber let me know. My heart is hurting for you. God bless you. I guess He needed a special angel. Named Angie.

What an inspiration! I taught Angie at Alleghany and continued our acquaintance while we lived in Harrisonburg. She was full of life & did not let her health issues keep her from being who she longed to be. Sadly, we had lost contact but she will be remembered with fondness. My sympathies to all of you.

The first morning not receiving a devotional text was a hard one. But I know her first morning in Heaven, she was living out her reward of all that she has imagined, dreamed, and hoped in her faith in Jesus. I'm so thankful that she let me help check off a bucket list item when we took a road trip outside of Richmond in 2016 to a revival meeting. We had the best time and formed a bond of sisterhood that I was truly blessed with these past 5 years. We laughed until our stomachs hurt and cried many tears together. We were prayer warriors for each other and I will miss that greatly, but I know we will both be worshipping Jesus face to face in His time. I love you Angie. I'm here if you need anything at all Heather. You have my prayers.

Angie is a dear friend in my favorite childhood memories. What a sweet, courageous, funny, and strong young lady. She was a bright light of the Gospel witness. She was a bold encouragement and kept friends lifted up with her unique quotes and with her prayers. She showed folks that limitations from disabilities can bring opportunities. I'll treasure our time together playing Barbies and riding bikes, sleepovers and birthday parties. Just hanging out with Ladd, their doggie, as her Dad watched MASH or when Frankie would cut our hair for us. The time goes quickly but as the saying goes old friends are gold. Thank you for your example Angie. (Revelation 21:4,5 John 14:2,3) All our love to Frankie, Heather and family You're in our prayers

I dearly loved Angie! I never saw her when she wasn't smiling. Her smile just lit up the room or whenever she was. I met her through the Educational Talent Search at Dabney S Lancaster Community College. She was also my fb friend. I know God had a huge smile on his face when he saw this beautiful angel 😇. Now, she is completely healed. Thank you Father God. She will be missed. 💗

Angie and I became best friends in elementary school. She was the goofiest, kindest, most full of hope person I know. We had the best times together even on the days when I knew she wasn't feeling the best. She never gave up or even slowed down really. She had a desire to live each day, each minute to the fullest and that's exactly what she did until her last minute. Angie was a gift to us all and this world is less brighter without her in it.

Dear Frankie and Heather, After reading her life story, I am so proud and happy of all she achieved. Most of us never accomplish near what she did in her short life, She was a blessing to so many and that's what I will remember. Never when we heard her diagnosis did we ever imagine all she would do and with such grace and beauty. My love to you both and your children and grandchildren. Will think of her often, especially as spring comes. Love, Betsy Carter.

Angela Marie Marshall Wilkerson, 47, of Hillsville passed away unexpectedly and peacefully at her home on Tuesday, February 23, 2021. Born August 19, 1973 in Roanoke, VA, Angie was a daughter of Frances “Frankie” Yearout Marshall and the late John Franklin “Frank” Marshall.

Angie was a member of the Eureka Baptist Church in Keysville, VA. Her faith and spirituality were at the core of her existence. Her church family, prayer partners, and Bible study groups meant the world to her.

Angie was a 1992 graduate of Alleghany High School in Covington VA. She graduated from Dabney S. Lancaster Community College in 1995 with an Associate of Science Degree in General Studies, and graduated from James Madison University in 1997 with a Bachelor’s of Social Work degree.

Diagnosed with Friedrich’s Ataxia, a progressive form of Muscular Dystrophy, at the age of twelve Angie never let her disability or her wheelchair define who she was. While in college, Angie began advocating for the disabled. She soon discovered that this was her true calling, and spent the rest of her life as an advocate, raising awareness about disabilities.

Her energies, that focused on educating others and change for the disabled, along with her dedication and motivation took her to amazing heights.

In 1994 Angie won the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Personal Achievement Award for the state of Virginia. A year later, in 2005, Angie was named Ms. Wheelchair Virginia, and was named 2nd runner up at the National Ms. Wheelchair Pageant in Albany NY.

As Ms. Wheelchair Virginia, Angie spent the year traveling the state of Virginia doing speaking engagements, educating people on the Americans with Disabilities Act and advocating for the disabled. Her motto was “Change Begins with Me.”She continued her work with Ms. Wheelchair Virginia for the next five years.

In 2011, Angie started a website called “Wheels to Motivate” and continued her advocacy by doing inspirational and educational speaking. Her advocacy reached a wide range of audiences including children, youth, seniors, persons with disabilities, and goal-oriented women.

Most recently, just two weeks ago, Angie was nominated to serve as a member of the Advocacy Board for a company licensed in Virginia to provide residential and community services for individuals diagnosed with intellectual disabilities, developmental disabilities or long term mental illnesses.

Angie had an independent and outgoing spirit, and a smile that would light up the room. She didn’t dwell on the challenges she faced, but put her energy into looking for solutions to them. She lived life to the fullest and embraced the opportunity for new experiences.

Despite being in a wheelchair, Angie was able to check off many of the items on her bucket list. Some of her favorite adventures were when she went horseback riding, went parasailing, rode in a hot air balloon, anddid adaptive surfing at Virginia Beach. Her personal travels took her on three cruises, where she was able to visit many countries and fulfill her dream of a gondola ride in Venice Italy.

Angie was an inspiration to so many people and she truly enriched the lives of her family and her many friends, who were all so very important to her. Angie’s hope was that everyone who came into her life would be a better person for having known her. May her memory be a blessing to everyone who knew and loved her,

In addition to her mother, Angie is survived by her sister, Heather Marshall Lewis and husband Mike, her beloved nephew, Michael Lewis III, and her adored nieces Gwendolyn and Adaline Lewis, all of Bedford, VA; aunt Nancy Marshall Alder; uncle, Sherwood (Carolyn) Marshall; Godmother, Barbara Thurman; numerous cousins; her former husband, James Wilkerson; and the many friends whose lives she touched.

In keeping with her wishes, Angie donated tissue samples to the Friedrich’s Ataxia Research Alliance, a national, nonprofit organization dedicated to the pursuit of scientific research leading to treatments and a cure for Friedrich’s Ataxia

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 2, 2021 at 11:00 am at Eureka Baptist Church, 4757 George Washington Highway (Rt.#40), Keysville, VA with Pastor Matthew Homan officiating. The family will receive friends for the viewing and visitation at the church an hour before the service. Social distancing and COVID precautions will be followed.

For family and friends who are unable to attend the service in person, it will be livestreamed at: www.facebook.com/EurekaBaptistChurch

Interment will follow the service in Lakeview Cemetery in Victoria, VA.The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 1503 Santa Rosa Rd. Room 120, Richmond, VA 23229 or the Friedrich’s Ataxia Research Alliance, 533 W. Uwchlan Ave, Downingtown, PA 19335.
